The latest assessment of Social Security by the American public continues to reflect the
strong support that has also characterized assessments in 1985 and 1995. Comparisons
between the 70th anniversary survey findings and the 50th and 60th anniversary surveys
suggest a greater appreciation for Social Security. The public’s positive attitudes toward
the program have continued strong in the results of the 70th anniversary survey, even as
the public debate has focused on the future of the program.
